Small Church
Go Small Or Go Home
Every big church was once a small church with big dreams. The people who jumped on board at the very beginning have stories to tell. Have you ever noticed how their eyes light up when they talk about “those early days”? And who can blame them? Those were exciting times!
So what kind of person are you? Are you looking for a big church, or one that has big dreams? The answer to this question will determine where you need to land. Our church is small, but we’re new, brand new in fact. Our spiritual concrete is still wet, and we haven’t written anything in stone… at least not yet.
One thing we do know is this: We’re not interested in doing church the same way everyone else does it. We like fellowships, hands-on ministry, potluck dinners in the evening, and doing life together with the people who know your name. Bottom line, we believe there’s great strength in being small.
For example:
1. In a small church, you’re more than a spectator who sits in a crowd. You are a person who others are excited to see. For us, names are more important than numbers, and relationships trump statistics.
2. In a small church, greeters are not recruited because they have the social skills to welcome people at the entrance—people they don’t even know and most likely never will. Our greeters are your true friends. They know you personally, like where you work and how many lumps of sugar you prefer in your coffee.
3. Have you ever wanted to ask a burning question in a big church? So where do you go to get the answers? If something is bugging you, we get that. In fact, we get excited over the process of debugging the mind and liberating the spirit.
4. Sure, the music is great in those big churches, and the preaching is entertaining most of the time. But are you really growing in Christ? Be honest. If he answer is “NO,” that doesn’t mean you’re headed for hell. No, you’re the same kind of different as us.
5. During the earthly ministry of Jesus, would you have wanted to be part of the 5,000 or one of the 12? The 5,000 had a really good meal—fish and bread. Yum! The 12, however, were equipped to change the world.
We could go on and on about the advantages of getting involved in a small, start-up church. The most important issue for us is whether you want to attend a church or be the church. Seriously, we are looking for the latter and discouraging the former.
That’s how we roll.
